Magento Open Source vs Commerce: when to step up
Magento Open Source vs Adobe Commerce — B2B, staging, RMA, and search licensing — and how to decide when the upgrade is worth the cost.
Magento 2 ships in two editions. The open-source core is powerful; Commerce layers enterprise features. This post helps you decide when the step up pays for itself — and what it means for your stack.
What Open Source gives you
The full catalog, checkout, CMS, theming (Luma/Hyva), extensions, and the architecture covered throughout this series. For most single-storefront retailers, it's enough.
What Commerce adds
- B2B — company accounts, shared catalogs, quotes (the earlier B2B post).
- Content staging & preview — schedule content changes.
- RMA — returns management.
- Adobe services — Live Search, Product Recommendations, sometimes bundled search.
The licensing & search angle
Commerce historically bundled Elasticsearch/OpenSearch licensing and SLAs. With Open Source you own the search stack yourself — which is exactly why a production-shaped local environment (OpenSearch wired via Govard) matters: you run the same engine Commerce would.
When to upgrade
Step up to Commerce when you actually need B2B negotiation, content staging at scale, or the bundled services — not "just in case." The operational cost (and the upgrade discipline from the earlier posts) is real.
Where this fits
This is the strategic capstone of the Magento 2 arc: you now know the architecture, the performance and security discipline, the B2B capabilities, and the build mechanics. Choose the edition that matches the revenue model, then run it with the habits from this whole series.
This is the final post in the Magento 2 deep-dives series.
